book onlineHow often should I see my gynecologist?
To stay healthy, patients should visit their gynecologist every year for a well-woman checkup to ensure they stay healthy as they move through different stages of life. Women’s health needs can vary dramatically as they get older.
Gynecology is focused on women’s health, with screenings, exams, evaluations, preventive care, and other treatments tailored to address the unique health needs of women.
It’s very important to schedule a gynecology exam when unusual symptoms occur or if STD testing, contraceptive services, or other treatments and services are needed.
Women with unusual medical needs may be advised to visit more frequently for screenings and other services.
What happens during a routine gynecological exam?
Dr. Hubbard begins every annual gynecology or well-woman visit with a review of the patient’s medical history and her symptoms.
He performs a clinical breast exam and other evaluations, including looking for signs of tenderness or swelling in the patient’s belly and evaluating the external genitalia for signs of disease or infections.
In most cases, Dr. Hubbard will perform a pelvic exam and, if appropriate, a Pap smear and/or an HPV test.
Depending on the patient’s symptoms and other factors, other exams may be performed or recommended, and the doctor may prescribe lab work like urinalysis, blood tests, or bone density scanning for women at risk of osteoporosis.
Finally, Dr. Hubbard will provide guidance based on the patient’s specific needs and concerns, including information about birth control, STD prevention and treatment, menopause, and other issues.
How can I tell if I need STD testing?
The CDC recommends annual STD testing for all adult women, with testing occurring more frequently — typically every three to six months — for women with risky sexual behavior, like having more than one partner or having unprotected sex. Pregnant women should also be tested.
Do I need to see a gynecologist once I stop having periods?
Yes. Gynecologists like Dr. Hubbard are skilled in caring for women of all ages, including women in menopause. In fact, women who no longer have periods have special health risks, including increased risks for osteoporosis and heart disease, that require regular testing and screening in order to identify those risks and treat them as early as possible. Dr. Hubbard can also help female patients decide if hormone replacement therapy (HRT) might be useful in preventing disease or treating specific post-menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness or painful intercourse.
